My sister is a powerhouse. She lives in Ennis, Co Clare, Ireland with her husband, three kids, two pigs and one dog. Now she works as an artist specialising in performance art, but she worked in the fitness industry for 14 years, notably as a personal trainer, gym manager and gym owner, kettlebell competitive lifter and kettlebell certification trainer. Rachel still strength trains daily and is an emphatic believer in the transformative power of strength training for mind and body.
We chatted for an hour, covering so much, why there should be no mirrors in gyms, the amazing transformation she saw in her gym clients, women’s fear of being muscly and how gendered the word ‘toned’ is, how as we grow older the ways we move become limited, Rachel’s first epiphany when she realised she could change the shape of her body through weights, her experience of opening her own gym, how to prioritise exercise, why kettle bells work so well… the list goes on. Please share this with anyone you know who enjoys or is interested in strength training. And thanks so much for watching/listening if you do.
You can subscribe to Rachel’s Substack here . Her essays on her pigs Luigi and Smudge and her journey with strength training are a must read.
