I’ll be honest - so many people would love to it but in fear of it effecting their jobs and businesses they wouldn’t do. But I think you are on to something.
We have seen the boycotts working on Tesla and Starbucks etc. Here is an interesting story of this in action.
Here in Liverpool they had to cancel Pride as they dropped Barclays as a sponsor but that left them without the funds to run. Crap right ? You take a moral stance but it negatively impacts another community who so need support right now. BUT There is a fundraiser and we are close to get it up and running. (Annie if you fancy using your platform to help push it please do) because of the community fighting back and people supporting again.
So boycotts don’t have to bring negative impact. So is a strike of spending - a whole day of no one spending money. Can you imagine ? Like Earth Day when we switch off the lights ?
A blackout ? If Gaza can’t eat or drink why should we ? A day of mindfulness and minimalism. Like Sundays used to be when shops weren’t open!
Blacking out social media. No one logs in. No one posts. A one minute silence that lasts for hours…
We need to think Extinction Rebellion style.
Please live chat this …it could get very very interesting
Love these suggestions Carmel. Obsessed with the spending black out! That’s so good! Gonna do another scheduled chat next Tuesday on ways to create impactful change around the U.K’s role in Gaza. Watch this space. Send me the link to shout about the fundraiser for Liverpool Pride?
Having seen the police commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, on Laura Kunsberg yesterday, I couldn’t help replying to his comment: ‘… We use our resources to best effect…’
Really? This is the best use of every pound!
I don’t think so!
I think you need to have more than a quiet word with your boss, the Home Secretary @yvettecoopermp and her boss @keirstarmer !
I’ve been working on an idea for a spending protest. Are you open to reading my idea and shaping it together if you think it has potential? I would love to share it with you both in hope and solidarity. Clare
I think it could work and that we should at least try, I can't bear another minute of watching the death and suffering of Palestinians and the hatred and hypocrisy of governments and some people in society. It feels empty to just comment online or donate, it isn't enough in the face of this insane extremism.
From Ireland, thanks Annie for speaking out, I’ve listened to your brilliant podcasts and always admired you, it means so much that you are talking about Gaza, it makes a difference x
I love that you’re asking this question. I know plenty of people who would support this but I think it’s so hard to figure out if enough of a critical mass of people would be willing (as so often we tend to have our strongest connections to people who agree with us on such things). The first step is asking the question though, which is a good start! 🍉❤️
I honestly cannot believe what we came home from Glasto to this year - the portrayal of having spent the last 5 days at a hate March, more kids dying on the tele with such a callous normalisation, anti-genocide protests being compared to terrorists (and silenced), a (Labour!) government trying to force through harsh welfare cuts, Badenoch on the other side showing the worst personal traits taking joy from the tears shed in Parliament, all socials filled to the rafters with very worst of society. I have never been an activist but I feel exactly the same, something has just got to give because what is going on? You can't go from San Remo to this and just get back to the day job like its anything close to normal or what we should be striving to be - equally keen to hear of ideas of what can be done to make any form of difference collectively.
Ps - in true Glastonbury spirit my girlfriend and I made pals with an aussie woman in her 60s called Katie at the festival on her own with a hand written setlist (Joy Crookes was our addition) at your Sidetracked show (which was also class!) and echo the words on CMAT (only went having heard her on Dish and was a firm highlight - real beautiful soul that girl with talent). We really do need to bottle the feeling of those 5 days to know all is not lost and things can be done to drive change because enough is enough.

I would do this - it feels like something which could actually be effective if it had a big level of support. Currently feeling hopeless/ helpless/ frustrated….
Hi Annie, I saw your callout on Instagram for an up to date list of companies to boycott. I think you need the Boycat app, which is the first app tracking all boycott targets that is backed by the official Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. There's more info here: https://www.ethicalconsumer.org/ethical-campaigns-boycotts/palestine-boycott-list

I will watch and join! The fundraiser page is https://www.gofundme.com/f/save-liverpool-pride-2025-keep-it-loud-local-and-proud Thank you so so much! I’ll DM you some posts on Insta too so you can just throw them in your stories! A no spend if worked would be pretty dramatic I would think - I’ll ask an economist..
Hi Carmel and Annie,
I’ve been working on an idea for a spending protest. Are you open to reading my idea and shaping it together if you think it has potential? I would love to share it with you both in hope and solidarity. Clare
Would love to read it Clare!
Fab! How do I share it with you?
Shall I DM you on Instagram?
Brilliant ideas Carmel and Annie.
My frustration leads to tear at times.
Its unbearable to watch.
I closed my Barclays account today and it felt both good and totally fucking hopeless in the same breath.
Imagine! Not only the impact it could have but also how uplifting it would be - to help us feel powerful instead of powerless!
A spending blackout is a brilliant idea.
1, it speaks to power in the only place it apparently feels pain, in its pockets.
2, it’s an incredibly easy protest for the participants to do. It actually saves us money.
Great suggestion Carmel.
Also doesn’t ostracise anyone which I love
Well, I'm game.
