I love this so much. I’ve also learnt from you what the term exceptionalism means! This describes my politics better than anything a party can produce.
And you l’ve also explained to me why there are some things where I have typical ADHD disrespect for rules and authority, but some where I obsessively stick to the rules and really judge people who don’t. My (also typically ADHD) inflated sense of injustice is usually about fairness and others. I was a stickler for the lockdown rules because they were about saving other people who were weaker than me. Ditto stuff like recycling and not littering as they’re about the environment and what we leave for our children’s generation. And anything that preserves the NHS and the BBC as they’re for everyone. And why I voted Remain (feck sovereignty, we’re always better with pals!)
Ahhh Annie I listened to this rather than reading it and it was amazing to hear your voice. Such good points. You are so right about human connection and community. I’m about to spend my first Christmas in Denmark, which prizes community and helping others and has a whole philosophy - Jante’s law- stating “you’re not to think you’re anything special”. I’m embracing living in a different culture whose values are much more aligned to mine but at the same time it can be lonely. Thank you for being a comforting voice in the midst of all of this. Love your substack. Have a fab Christmas! Ali
love this Ali! love Jante’s Law, in Ireland we have the word ‘notions’ - which is this phrase in a nutshell. If someone has notions they think they’re special and it’s not a good thing 😂 - have a lovely Christmas in beautiful Denmark x
Well I’m very glad you misunderstood the instructions, this was just a beautiful piece full of truth bombs and tragically beautiful observations on the world we live in today . A modern day sermon indeed .
Awesome sermon - very much left with the beautiful metaphor of the murmation of humans - that creates a sense of our own nature - maybe not so disconnected after all - heard of you but not familiar with all your changes work so looking forward to getting into these thank you!
This was a brilliant evening and it was great to be there and just listen to all the Substack writers. There were laughs, tears, and thoughts.
I really hope there are more of these and we all need to get back to the nightclubs!

Must be my Irish blood 😜🇮🇪
ah thanks so much Helen. Yes it’s a really good foundation for how to live in the world. A good measure for your values.
