I’m just back from the Christmas Pantomime with my seven year old. I have a bad head from the cocktails and Guinness I drank yesterday. I am so ready to be horizontal on the sofa watching a Christmas film, but there’s wrapping to do, so much wrapping. After I wrap, I am hoping to sneak in a little ten to fifteen minute Christmas nap.
Oh the Christmas nap! There is nothing as sweet or as restorative. I remember going to my now husbands house for Christmas for the first time. My Mother in law likes the house warm. I’m talking tropical greenhouse warm. I come from a house where we bring hot water bottles to bed and are told to put on a jumper if we’re cold. This heat was a real novelty for me, so much so that in the middle of the afternoon, without any intention, I fell into a deep slumber on their living room sofa. I woke up drooling on a cushion around an hour later. My husbands parents had very carefully tip toed around me while I slept, making sure not to wake me. I was absolutely mortified. I was the new girlfriend! I was their house guest! I couldn’t believe that I allowed myself to succumb to an ugly drooling sleep in front of them on Christmas day, even if I was drugged by the central heating. But they laughed. Years later we still roll out the story, and now I laugh too.
I’m wishing you a nap this Christmas.
Because there is no Christmas day situation, be it sibling tensions, dirty saucepans, packing to go away, dragging everyone out for a walk, missing loved ones, keeping the kids calm, boardgames, arguments, the too drunk relative, the loneliness of it all, that can’t be changed for the better with a short switch off of your frazzled brain. Switch it off. Unplug. Even for five minutes. Let your mouth hang open. Drool it out.
And to help you on your way, please accept this gift from me; a carefully curated playlist of soft sounds to lull you into sleep. I really hope you enjoy it.
Happy Christmas. xx
This playlist is perfection 👌🏼, thank you x
After cooking all morning and early afternoon, Christmas dinner and the strictly Christmas special I had a tactical nap, and it was the BEST. Merry Christmas!
